Hello everyone! As of yesterday I have accepted a position with the Libertarian National Committee in Washington D.C. I will be moving there soon to work for the cause of Liberty in this country in this difficult time. Volunteer and Affiliates Coordinator for the Libertarian Party. Petersen
will be filling the role as a national coordinator of libertarian volunteers
and activists. Additionally, he will be working closely with state

It’s common to hear today from Americans that “if we knew then what we know today, we should never have gone to Vietnam. “ Even my father who served as a Green Beret and who agreed with the Iraq invasion visits his friends names at the Vietnam Memorial with a tear in his eye and regret in his voice. It’s easier to look at Vietnam and understand the folly of that action, but how many people today could knowledgeably argue against the necessity of the Civil War while tracing its root causes? Now, ask yourself how many people could successfully trace today’s economic problems directly to one founding father? Thomas DiLorenzo successfully does just that.

In “Hamilton’s Curse,” DiLorenzo eviscerates the Hamiltonian policies of Mercantilism. It’s no big surprise to libertarians that the larger the government grows; the more incentivized businesses are to corrupt it and impose laws that benefit them. In this book the blame for today’s system of crony capitalism is laid directly at the feet of Thomas Jefferson’s archenemy, Alexander Hamilton.

DiLorenzo argues that it is that the policies of big government and central banking espoused by Hamilton that laid the seeds for the Civil War. Also, DiLorenzo condemns Hamilton’s intellectual descendents such as Henry Clay who imposed the “Tariff of Abominations” that drew the first line between the North and South. “Hamilton’s Curse” does a great job of connecting the dots in history for where conservative small government policies were undermined by the central planners.

It’s entertaining to read about how frustrated Hamilton was by Jefferson, who was too concerned with public liberty. Their pitched struggle for decentralized control of the economy is one that is too often lost in the politically correct miasma of public education. It is sad to see that Congress today is filled with Hamilton’s intellectual heirs, rather than Jefferson’s.

The book is a quick and worthwhile read for those who are interested in understanding the root causes for America’s problems. DiLorenzo successfully argues that most of today’s problems of American Imperialism arise from the fact that, although it is Jefferson we fondly remember, it is Hamilton’s system we live under today. As long as America ignores its history and the perils of big government, more men will walk away from cold monuments with tears in their eyes and loss in their hearts.

Thomas J. DiLorenzo is professor of economics at Loyola College in Maryland and a senior fellow at the Ludwig von Mises Institute. He is the author or co-author of ten books, on subjects such as antitrust, group-interest politics, and interventionism generally.

Recarving Rushmore Book Review

What’s going on here?

If there’s one thing that really annoys me about libertarianism in general; it’s that every time I think I will find a president I can really like, someone has to come along and utterly destroy them. I really wanted to like most of these men, I did. I was taught in school to think that Lincoln was the great emancipator of the slaves, and champion of civil rights. Looking back on school now, I remember that almost all of our presidents were lauded as great heroes and saviors of their people. But darn it all if “facts are stubborn things.” I thought I was fairly safe as a Libertarian with Thomas Jefferson as my favorite president. Then I opened up “Recarving Rushmore,” to see him at number 26 with a ranking of “bad president.” Ouch.

In “Recarving Rushmore,” Ivan Eland ranks the presidents, not in order of how they instituted Great Societies, or embarked on large-scale social engineering like the New Deal, but in order of how they ensured peace, prosperity, and liberty (P, P & L scale). Eland’s book doesn’t read as if it’s biased or opinionated. On the contrary, this is a scholarly piece of work that offers a ranking system from number one down to forty-three. You’ll be surprised at who comes up first and last. Hint: It’s not Abe or George W.

The only criticism that I had is a mild one that the book is more of a guide for presidential policy relating to liberty than an exciting polemic to fire up the limited government types. Eland writes in a style that is direct and fair, but sometimes stodgy. It’s not a quick read that will have you burning the midnight oil. If you have a passion for this subject though you will want to finish it.

Libertarians who seek easy access to information can easily reference this text for what they need and therein lays the books usefulness. The ranking system applied is credible, as is the author, who holds an MBA in Economics and is a senior fellow at the esteemed Independent Institute. A graduate of Iowa State, Mr. Eland spent fifteen years working for congress on foreign affairs and national security issues.

Some of the information you’ll find in this book will surprise you even if you’re the type who prides themselves on knowledge of Presidential history. For instance, I wasn’t aware that George Washington’s precedent of leaving office after two terms wasn’t an established law, until Roosevelt abused the privilege during World War II. Afterwards a constitutional amendment codified it. Tidbits like this make the book well worth a read, and a good reference guide for any freedom lover who would draw on it as a resource.

Book Review

In “The Conscience of a Libertarian,” Wayne Allyn Root, the great sports prognosticator (and S.O.B.) spies a citizen revolution brewing in his crystal ball. It’s hard to tell whether he’ll be proved right as the book is not so much a prediction of the future as it is a shield beating, torch bearing, meat cleaver swinging call to revolution for what he calls the “battered voters” of the United States.

W.A.R. dons on his fathers bloody apron and ties the string tight as he hacks away mercilessly at the left wing socialist administration currently occupying the White House. He doesn’t mince words for either side of the Republican and Democrat divide (no surprise there isn’t one).

Root is a small businessman who was heavily affected by the legislation that banned online poker. He rails against the moral authoritarians while offering the libertarian compromise as an alternative to faith based policy. He sees federal intervention in Jeffersonian terms as intervention by a foreign government.

Quoting heavily from Goldwater, his intellectual hero, W.A.R. obliterates government intrusion into gay marriage/civil union issues. I read for the first time Senator Goldwater’s quote, “I don’t care if a soldier is straight, as long as he shoots straight.” A rare insight into a man I am looking forward to learning more about thanks to Wayne’s Book.

Root is obviously earnest in his desire to work for a libertarian future. I think there are valid criticisms that he is too overbearing in appearances, which is also reflected in how his book reads. You feel as if you are being yelled at all the time. In reading “The Conscience…” the reader wants to tell him to calm down and explain slowly so we can get the message. Also the Francophobia is a bit much.

Regardless of the criticisms (that only drive him on harder), the libertarian movement in general needs all the help it can get from this man. He’s genuinely interesting even if you are extremely radical, or the most prudish pragmatist in the party.

If you’re the type to read a book because you want to get fired up, learn some facts you might not have known, and get to know more about an LP celeb, then definitely get the book.

According to Veliyev, Emin Milli, a youth activist, and Adnan Haji-zade, a popular opposition blogger, were approached by two men and sternly asked why they had been blogging in internet forums on subjects such as liberty and democracy. The discussion escalated and violence ensued – Adnan suffering a broken nose and Emin sustaining a leg injury. Soon after, Milli and Haji-zade were arrested and charged with “hooliganism” – which carries a maximum sentence of 5 years in prison. They are now being held in pre-trial detention for two months. Authorities maintain that Milli and Haji-zade were the aggressors in the incident and are accusing them of “assault and inflicting injuries” on Babak Huseynov and Vusal Mammadov, who were only “trying to restore order in a restaurant,” according to police. A judge denied Milli and Haji-zade an open hearing and they were initially refused the choice of counsel – despite their attorney’s presence at the detainment center. Both men have also gone without proper medical treatment by police.
